I’ll be adding various facts and accompanying graphics to the site every now and then, and today, we look at sheer performance under the logos.
This may be the most obvious example if you’re the kind who believe in jinx’s and bad mojo.
The Leafs have won 11 Stanley Cups in their history (not counting the Arenas and St. Pats one each), and have lost in the finals 9 times, for a total of 20 finals appearances.
The 39-67 logo was the logo for ten of the cup appearances (NOTE: 1967 included, as that was the jersey they wore the majority of the year, the centennial one was brought in during the playoffs), and 4 of those finals appearances. For a team that’s been around for 82 years now, its amazing that if you remove those 28 years you only have 1 cup and 5 finals appearances in 54 years, and those came in the span of 14 years that had logos that weren’t the current logo.
What have the Leafs done in the 39 years with this current logo?
Zero Stanley Cups.
Zero Finals Appearances.
Four conference finals appearances, all in a 10 year timeframe.
That is all. Enjoy your avatar, sig, and miniposter.

I’m going to point out the rather obvious flaw in your argument – correlation is not causation. You’re looking at the correlation that the logo change happens to be also during the era where they didn’t win any Stanley Cups, and turning that into causation that the logo is causing the Leafs to not win the Cup. In plain English, you’re basically saying that the players don’t play well because their logo sucks. If that sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is. The flip side to what you’re implying is that simply changing the logo will somehow make the Leafs play better and will even net them a Stanley. An over-simplification at the least.
I’m actually completely in agreement with you. For one, we all know that the 3rd jersey looks the best. Secondly, I have been waiting how many years to see those green jersies on St. Patrick’s Day and have been disappointed, bring back the green! Thirdly, while “not a Leaf fan” is quick to critize your “oversimplification”, I believe you may be right. I would like to see the Leafs record with the third jersey on because from what I’ve seen they definitely play better. It’s not just an illusion either. Didn’t the Leafs have a absolutely terrific record when wearing the 3rd jersies in the early part of the decade? I distinctly remember Joe Bowen talking about it.
I don’t care what the Leafs wear. I just wish they’d respect hockey fans and drop their (unspoken yet firm) objection to a second team in southern Ontario.
The pre-1967 jersey is a better one, though …
It doesn’t matter what logo the team uses. The only thing that matters is what happens on the ice. Jersey logos are not going to win hockey games. The players are doing the work, the jersey just shows who these players are and who they play for.
